What to check in any purchase planning tool
Questions that separate a planner that fits a wholesaler from one built for a web shop.
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it read your ERP export as it is? | If you have to reshape the file every month, the spreadsheet work comes back. |
| Can lead time differ per supplier and per item? | A sea supplier at 12 weeks and a local one at 2 weeks need different reorder points. |
| Does it treat available stock correctly? | If your ERP already takes customer orders off, a tool that subtracts them again will over-order. |
| How does it handle a one-off big order? | One large customer order can inflate the average for a year unless it is left out. |
| Does it know a stock-out from a slow month? | Zero sales because the shelf was empty is not the same as zero demand. |
| Does it plan seasons by freight mode? | Christmas stock ordered by sea in September arrives too late. The tool should tell you in August. |
| Where does your data go? | Sales by customer and purchase prices are sensitive. Know whether they leave your computer. |
